LASEK laser eye surgery diaries: Preparing for LASEK laser eye surgery day

Hello and welcome back to my LASEK laser eye surgery diaries series. This is my eighth entry, so if you’d like to start from the beginning, visit “LASEK laser eye surgery diaries: The backstory”.

Shopping list

✅ Buy non-prescribed sunglasses to use after the surgery

Nice to have

✅ Buy non-prescribed blue filter glasses for use during the recovery process (I read somewhere this helps with the recovery process as the screen can be harsh on your eyes)

✅ Buy headbands to block hair from getting into my eyes

✅ Buy vitamin C to speed up the healing process

✅ Buy a smart light so I can turn it on from my bed and control the brightness as and when needed

Things to do/prepare before surgery

✅ Organise a pick-up from the clinic after your surgery because you’ll not be able to drive

✅ Read and understand the informed brochure and documents linked on this page

✅ Make a list of any questions to ask your surgeon before the surgery

✅ Complete the eye drops programme pre-surgery

✅ Get a consent letter from my GP regarding mental health

✅ Get an asthma review

✅ Booked annual leave

✅ Understand your medications – create a timetable/schedule if you need

✅ Podcasts or audiobooks for you to read when you have to keep your eyes close

Nice to have

✅ Prepare a dark room to stay with a mini fridge to store eye drops

Booking time off work

Depending on whether you’re getting LASIK or LASEK (worth researching so you can understand the differences); with LASIK, the recovery time is pretty much immediately or the next day, whereas with LASEK, it takes a week at least so you’d need to book some time off work to recover.

Other things to keep in mind…

  • If you wear contact lenses, you’ll be told not to wear them for a certain amount of time (you’ll be given this information in your confirmation email)
  • Eat at least 2 hours before your appointment
  • Bring your sunglasses to your appointment
  • Bring a pen and notebook with you on the surgery day in case any information is given to you and you might forget about it.
